What is Empathy and why is it an important leadership skill?
Empathy is the ability to understand the rational, emotional and contextual drivers of other people. It is essentially peering into why people do what they do and is one of the most important and challenging skills in leadership today. The old way of managing - focusing on systems and processes, leaves people feeling like they are just a cog in the wheel . The result is, they resent it. They resent you.
Why is empathy critical for business?
Understanding people is the hardest and most important skill in business. When leaders and businesses develop this skill, they understand their employees, customers and stakeholders. They are then able to develop breakthrough competitive strategies and foster powerful teams. Imagine if you could drastically change your bottom line by changing the way you communicate with your workers.
What is the difference between empathy and sympathy?
In simple terms, sympathy is about how you feel and empathy is about why they feel. Empathy is living in their world, sympathy is your feelings imagining theirs.
How does your Unique & Practical Perspective create meaningful change?
We don't look at culture or empathy in isolation. Too often there is a focus on driving the numbers in one room and culture in another. These strategies need to be congruent and aligned to drive performance. We blend the two worlds. When you make your people feel welcome, they will commit and feel inspired.
How does Empathy drive Profit?
We improve your performance in 3 major ways:
I've found that it's not just all about numbers, it's actually all about people.
How do you inspire people to eagerly embrace the skills of empathy?
By blending practical examples, personal stories and purposeful actions, I allow people to see the relevance and feel the emotion. They then crave the actions to implement. When they see the potential, they can't wait to make it work for them. If we can change the way we engage with people, we can significantly change the outcomes we get.
Why are you considered to be one of the best?
I've spent more than 15 years working with executives of Australia's largest organisations to solve their biggest problems. Since launching Empathic Consulting, we've worked with the giants of the ASX: BHP, CBA, IAG, Allianz, PwC and many more.
This just sounds too fluffy.
I thought so too. That's why I provide real examples of how understanding, trust and commitment, founded in empathic leadership, took one airline from $2 a share to $50 a share in a few short years.
Why have you chosen to focus on practical application rather than further qualifications?
The deep dive into academia is one I'm still not sure on taking. With a BSc and MBA, I'm more focused on looking at practical application in business than producing academic research at this stage.
